High Velocity Suspension Flame Spraying of Nano‐Structured Materials and Related Industrial Applications
Thermal spraying of fine‐structured power materials requires the application of agglomerated powders that that can be processed using APS (atmospheric plasma spraying) or HVOF (high velocity oxy fuel flame spraying) spray process. Alternatively, the powder can be converted into a finely dispersed suspension together with an organic solvent, appropriate for suspension spraying. Both methods are suitable to manufacture finely structured coatings and offer new possibilities in functional coating development for new application fields. Due to their refined microstructure, mechanical and physical coating properties can differ significantly from their conventionally sprayed counterparts. High velocity suspension frame spraying is preferably chosen if dense coating need to be fabricated. This paper will provide an overview about current suspension spray development activities using an in‐house developed supersonic flame spray system and will present some industrial application examples.
