Slender Chimneys and Towers
This chapter presents material that complements the response of towers and chimneys with circular cross section and allows the practical calculation of that response. It briefly discusses issues related to the aeroelastic response of slender structures with square or rectangular cross section and describes methods of alleviating wind‐induced oscillations of slender structures. Aerodynamic damping in tall buildings results from the interaction between the fluctuating aerodynamic forces acting on the building and the fluctuating building motions they induce. The chapter discusses the aerodynamic damping affecting the along‐wind motion of an isolated building with a rectangular shape in plan. Unlike for along‐wind aeroelastic response, no practical analytical approach is available for the estimation of across‐wind aeroelastic response. A common method of alleviating vortex‐induced oscillations is the provision of "spoiler" devices that destroy or reduce the coherence of shed vortices.
