A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Among the list of spaces that Georges Perec labels as “Uninhabitable,” we could add the Concrete City. As Danny Hoffman illustrates of Monrovia, the concrete architecture inherited from the modernist movement is “uninhabitable.” The Concrete City itself has come to symbolize promises of progress, modernity, and capitalist prosperity. But recently, it has also sparked many criticisms. This chapter sheds light on these criticisms concerning the social and environmental effects of increasingly concrete landscapes. It explores the tremendous environmental impact of concrete. The chapter brings together literatures often separated in the analysis of contemporary urbanism. In exploring the possible alternatives of environmental transition, it underlines the crucial role of social demand for a fairer city and a less polluted living environment and building materials. Within and between Africa as in Europe, connections must be made to rethink the entire construction sector and cement industry and to reinvent the global culture of construction.
