Evaluating potential quagga mussel control measures in Colorado River water
This research evaluated the efficacy of selected oxidants (chlorine, chloramines, chlorine dioxide, and ozone) and coagulants and coagulant aids (alum, ferric chloride, and polydiallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride [polyDADMAC]) as potential molluscicides for juvenile and adult quagga mussels. Tests were conducted using bench‐ and pilot‐scale flow‐through systems supplied with Colorado River water. The efficacy of each quagga mussel control measure was evaluated in terms of mortality rate, closure‐response, and dose‐response, if applicable. Chlorine, chloramines, chlorine dioxide, and ozone were found to be effective molluscicides. Alum and ferric chloride at the moderate dosages studied here were not effective molluscicides. Although polyDADMAC alone was shown to be an effective molluscicide, combining alum and polyDADMAC resulted in no quagga mussel mortality.
