Well Monitoring and Maintenance
This chapter considers the well system from the viewpoint of: the factors that influence performance; the approaches available for monitoring performance; and the measures that can be applied for maintenance or rehabilitation. It focuses on monitoring and maintenance of water supply wells. The factors affecting well performance can be categorized according to the nature of the processes involved: physical, chemical or microbiological. In order to be able to assess any decline in performance of a well system, and identify the causes behind this decline, the performance and condition of the well system must be monitored, together with the processes that influence the performance. Maintenance is an essential part of the well system operation, and proper maintenance depends on having correct procedures in place for monitoring and diagnosis. The approaches adopted for decommissioning a well will depend on the type and condition of the well and on the hydrogeology.
