A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Attitudes to renewable materials, energy issues and the policy context
Attitudes to renewable materials and energy issues are dealt with, and a sceptical view of government climate change policies and a discussion of carbon savings are given. Then there is a critical review of energy saving policies and UK measures such as the Code for Sustainable Homes, planning policies and zero carbon. It looks at alternative approaches such as the ‘carbon spike’ and deals with the debate over the importance of operational and embodied energy and how embodied energy has been ignored. Poor policies from AECB and RIBA and ‘passiv haus’ are compared with the advantages of carbon footprinting. Renewable materials, embodied energy and carbon sequestration are explained. The Green Deal and the official promotion of synthetic insulation materials are covered, as are some other hostile attitudes to natural materials.
