Materials and sustainable building design
This chapter presents the many ways in which the choice of materials can influence the sustainability of a building design. The major methods of assessing the effectiveness of different materials are discussed, including their suitability in relation to satisfying building regulations. The use of BES 6001 and the ethical aspects of material choice are described. Life cycle assessment and whole‐life carbon are discussed alongside the consequences of different material choices. The differences between embodied energy and embodied carbon are examined, and example calculations are presented. The premise behind the use of recycled and reused materials/products is considered, acting as a precursor to the processes related to recycling described in Chapter 5. The necessary skills needed to fashion and fix new materials and the relationship between these materials and the local community are discussed. Some of the more notable alternative construction materials are described along with examples of their use.
