Urban Water Supplies in Developing Countries: WHO Report
This article presents the principal conclusions of a study made in connection with the Community Water Supply Program launched in 1959 by the Twelfth World Health Assembly. This study, which was published in the World Health Organization (WHO) Public Health Papers series, focuses on urban rather than rural water supplies chiefly because of the direct relationship between urban development and economic progress, and because rural improvements can more easily be carried out around urban centers with sound sanitary conditions. The study chose 75 countries to participate, which were mainly developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The authors estimate future needs and calculate costs for a 15‐year period (1962‐77).
