Limit States and General Requirements
Structural steel bridges must be designed so that their performance under load does not go beyond the limit states prescribed by the AASHTO Bridge Specifications. Service limit states relate to the performance of a bridge subjected to the forces applied when it is put into service. Most owners require deflection limits in order to provide an acceptable stiffness that likely improves overall system performance. Load induced fatigue can occur when live load produces a repetitive net tensile stress at a connection detail. A strength limit state is governed by the static strength of the materials or the stability of a given cross section. Extreme event limit states are unique occurrences with return periods in excess of the design life of the bridge. Steel structures should be cambered during fabrication to compensate for dead‐load deflection and vertical curves associated with the alignment of the roadway.
