Real Estate and Property Rights in Humanitarian Design
Humanitarian design is the act of architectural design wherein the actor is principally driven to contribute expertise and capital to advance the design and construction of architecture, which is a consequence of the violence engendered by human and natural disasters. This chapter examines a variety of formal and informal real property constructs, which impact design decisions for the provision of architecture in times of need. Humanitarian design is bounded by a series of emerging rules, codified as operational protocol and/or international laws, which are driving the strategic actions of the world's leading humanitarian organisations. These professional practices are framed in the context of a critical examination of the relationships between the actors, beneficiaries and the property. The chapter attempts to identify generalisable concepts, which may provide the designer with some sensitivity to the timing, content and implications of his or her design decisions.
