A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter examines the specific features of the various different categories of wood‐based sheet materials (also referred to as ‘panel products’, ‘wood panels’, or sometimes ‘wood‐based boards’) that are in use in the construction industry. In the context of ‘construction’, it also includes joinery, shopfitting, and flooring uses, as well as just standard ‘building’. The chapter provides information on the generic types of plywood: conifer plywoods, temperate hardwood plywoods, and tropical hardwood plywoods, each of which has some particular characteristics that will make it somewhat different from each of the others. There are three basic types of adhesive resins used in the manufacture of plywood: urea formaldehyde, phenol formaldehyde, and melamine formaldehyde. Anything else which bears the epithet ‘marine ply’ but is not proven or guaranteed in some independently tested way is therefore not in accordance with BS 1088 and should simply not be trusted as being marine plywood.
