This chapter reviews building science principles that relate to design, selection and installation of gypsum panel products. It talks about structural movement, fire resistance, heat transfer, sound transmission and vapor control. The chapter analyzes how buildings move, and how that movement relates to partition construction techniques, and presents the fundamentals of fire resistance. Testing and product performance are the main focal points. It reviews the science of heat transfer as it relates to the built environment‐including factors that influence selection of insulation. The chapter discusses basic sound transmission principles plus information USG has accumulated from experience, research and close association with acoustical consultants.
