A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Collective Intelligence (2006)
Collective intelligence’, as both a concept and a term, has its roots in a number of historical and contemporary contexts. This chapter presents two essays by Christopher Hight, Chris Perry and Philippe Morel. The first essay, by Hight and Perry, emphasizes the dual nature of digital participation, bureaucratic and democratic, global and local, and seen potentially both as an emanation of late‐capitalist corporations and market forces and as an expression of social activism and self‐organizing communities. The second essay, by Morel, discusses the rise of grid computing and its potential to bring to fruition one of the premises of the digital turn, cheap, ubiquitous and theoretically unlimited processing power. As an example of this ‘quantitative shift’ in design computing, Morel shows his own Bolivar Chair, a genetic notation supported by distributed computing, which includes expert structural feedback and file‐to‐factory fabrication technologies.
