Tornado‐ and Hurricane‐Borne Missile Speeds
This chapter reviews approaches to determining tornado‐ and hurricane‐borne missile speeds for structural design purposes. It discusses the tornado‐borne and hurricane‐borne missiles, respectively. For the design of nuclear power plants, objects commonly considered as potential missiles include bluff bodies such as planks, steel rods, steel pipes, utility poles, and automobiles. The chapter reviews approaches to the tornado‐borne missile problem based on deterministic modeling and probabilistic modeling. It considers the assumptions on the basis of which the hurricane‐borne missile speed calculations are performed. The chapter presents a sample of results of the numerical calculations and closed form equations as opposed to numerical solutions for the case of wind speeds independent of height above ground. The closed form equations provide useful insights into the missiles dynamic behavior as a function of the various parameters of the motion.
