Ground Water Development in New Haven
This article discusses the locating, testing, and developing of the groundwater supply for the town of Cheshire, Connecticut. Seven test wells were installed. The first, which was closest to Mill River, reached ledge rock at a 48‐ft depth. The remaining six, at varying distances west of Mill River, encountered a ledge at depths of 104‐ 195 ft. Four were selected for 24‐hr test pumping, yielding from 9 to 15 gpm of medium‐soft water per foot of drawdown. It was estimated that these sites will each yield a maximum of 800‐1,000 gpm when developed with gravel‐packed wells. At this site, 1,003 ft of 8‐in. test wells, including 41 ft of penetration into the underlying sandstone, were installed and removed. Approximately 350 ft of 2‐in. observation wells were installed. Four of the seven wells were test pumped for 24 hr. The entire test program at this site totalled $14,148, or an average of $14.10 per foot of 8‐in. test well.
