Fracture Mechanics Tests
This chapter discusses in some detail the various techniques available to both determine fracture toughness of brittle materials and investigates the mechanisms of crack growth. Double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were the first to be used to directly determine the crack growth resistance of brittle materials, both ceramics and polymers. The primary advantage of the DCB specimen is in conducting controlled crack growth experiments to obtain fundamental knowledge of fracture mechanisms. There are two basic indentation test methods to determine critical fracture toughness: Indentation fracture (IF); and a Vickers indenter. The lengths of the cracks emanating from the corners of the indentation are measured, and this data is combined with knowledge of the elastic properties and hardness to calculate fracture toughness. In the second, the indentation is placed in a bar of the material, and the strength of the bar measured in flexure.
