Imagining the Land Between the Rivers: Urbanism and Culture
This chapter presents some essential aspects of the urban though of the twentieth century, since its tendency towards gigantism, with the increasing diffusion of skyscrapers, which appeared as a mass of towers, to the relationship between the human being and the city's architecture. The terrace, obviously based on the ancient classical architecture, was thus borrowed for many ancient cities including Mesopotamia's Euphrates capital ruled by the tyrannical Assur, portrayed by Roldano Lupi, in 1954. In the film, on the right side of the river, is visible a large courtyard punctuated by several colonnades in classical style. The ancient Mesopotamian city was characterized, in its early stages, by the prominence that one of its structures acquired, both in terms of power as well as in terms of size: the temple – considered to be the earthly abode of the deities.
