Purpose and Operation of USGS Water Quality Networks
This article discusses ten U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) networks as examples of the three principal categories of USGS operations. Observations in one network may have applications in other networks. Thus, the USGS program provides quantitative assessment of the quality of water as it falls from the sky, reacts with rocks, soil, vegetation, and the products of man, and finally merges with the ocean. Nevertheless, the program samples only a small part of the earth's hydrosphere. Basic water facts thus obtained must not only meet local needs but must also be applied to unsampled areas through correlation techniques and other statistical treatment. The usefulness of basic data has been stressed. These records appear in numerous USGS publications and in those of other federal bureaus, state agencies, and university experiment stations.
