    MBR Technology for Wastewater Reclamation in Rural Areas

    This article discusses a program by the Bega Valley Shire Council, located in New South Wales, Australia, to upgrade five existing sewage treatment plants to biological nutrient removal facilities and install a new pressurized sewage collection system combined with membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment plants in the towns of Cobargo, Wolumla, Kalaru, and Candelo. The program also includes operation and maintenance of the new and existing sewage treatment plants for 10 years, with an option for the council to extend the agreement for an additional five years. The article discusses the MBR process, how it reduces plant footprint, and resulting cost savings. The suitability of MBRs for rural areas is highlighted.
