Selective Ion Electrode System for Fluoride Analysis
This article discusses the development and testing of a fluoride electrode that resulted in a continuous fluoride monitoring system, with a probable accuracy equal to that of present colorimetric techniques. Standardization techniques using the water to be analyzed at a particular installation will minimize or eliminate interferences introduced by variations in pH, total ionic strength, and complexing ions in the process. Use of the fluoride monitoring system should: eliminate routine and tedious laboratory analyses; provide a continuous record of the actual fluoride present in the water; actuate alarms to alert personnel to under‐ or over‐fluoridation due to feeder malfunction; and, provide continuous feedback control of fluoridation for close regulation and resultant savings in chemicals.
