Recommendations for Testing Piles Under Cyclic Loading
This chapter presents recommendations on the tests and checks to carry out in the context of the design and construction of piles for structures subjected to cyclic loads, either axial or transverse. It examines the contributions of loading tests on reduced‐scale models (calibration chamber, centrifuge), and those of loading tests on piles in situ in order to define representative cyclic loading procedures, required measurements and appropriate type of instrumentation. The calibration chamber is a “1 g” physical modeling tool that is well suited for a detailed study of the axial response of an elementary “slice” of the soil‐pile system (or a pile segment), representative of a given depth. The tool is also adapted for measuring the mobilization of the local friction at the soil‐pile interface and its evolution under various types of loading (monotonic, cyclic).
