Energy Geostructures in Unsaturated Soils
This chapter includes a critical review and summary of data presented in the literature on the different impacts of temperature on the thermohydromechanical behavior of unsaturated soils, as well as a discussion on the implications of temperature on the behavior of geosynthetic reinforcements. It shows two experimental studies of thermally induced water flow away from an axisymmetric line heat source in unsaturated soils. Temperature primarily affects the shear strength and stiffness of soils through volume change and changes in the shape of the plastic yield surface. The chapter figures out soil‐water retention curve (SWRC) for soils defined under constant temperature, and discusses constant relative humidity (Rh) for different temperatures (T). Recent studies on reinforcement of poorly draining backfills have focused on measurement of the effects of suction on soil—geosynthetic interface shear strength.
