A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
A Carbon‐free City, Uppsala
Uppsala is the fourth largest city of Sweden, situated one hour away from Stockholm. In 2014, the municipality adopted an ecological program with a focus on reducing the use of carbon sources of energy to its minimum. This chapter looks into what lessons can be learnt from this program and what are its limitations through the aid of public documents which will provide initial avenues of analysis. It also looks at the objectives and proposals of the program and thereafter presents an assessment that will lead to the conclusion. The plan for Uppsala highlights some interesting concepts and plans such as its special focus in green areas, as it considers it as a solution for heat islands, social relationships and comfort in city. The solutions presented are undoubtedly well‐intended but are still questionable if they will be sufficient for the city to achieve all the objectives, socially, economically and environmentally.
