Emerging Contaminants and Pollutants of Concern
Emerging contaminants are substances that have been detected and proved to be threats to living things in most recent years. The concerns over the emerging pollutants are focused on their persistent, bio‐accumulative, and toxic features. Most emerging pollutants are water‐soluble, which makes them prone to be emitted to water and affect the aquatic environment. This chapter provides a systematic understanding of the catchment management of emerging pollutants. Pollution pathways are important to understand how and how many emerging pollutants emitted from various sources are dispersed and distributed in the environment. Compared to the pollution pathway analysis that explores the dispersion and distribution of emerging pollutants in the environment, life cycle analysis takes more processes into consideration, including production and use and waste management. Several mitigating measures can also be implemented to improve waste management. The remediation of emerging pollutants is mostly focused on improvement in the wastewater treatment processes.
