A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Country and City, 1921–1933
Fundamentalism, the Scopes Trial, Urbanization and Suburbanization, and the Middletown Study
Three conflicts highlight the battle between city and countryside in this era. Fundamentalism grew as a strong force with nationally known figures like radio personality Aimee Semple McPherson, causing conflicts between the forces of modernism and secularism and adherents of more traditional rural values. In the Scopes trial, fundamentalist rural activists tried to ban the teaching of evolution in 1925. While evolutionists were vindicated by the trial, over time and on the local, school‐board level creationists found allies. Finally, urbanization and suburbanization drew people to cities as the countryside shrank in this era, introducing social change and a new area of scholarly inquiry, the city study. Historians have wrestled with all these topics since the 1920s, often finding in them echoes of contemporary debates.
