Removal of New Indicators by Coagulation and Filtration
The removal of yeasts and acid‐fast organisms by chemical coagulation and rapid‐rate sand filtration was compared in laboratory studies with that of the currently accepted group of indicator organisms, total coliforms. These studies indicate that coagulation and filtration do not remove yeasts and acid‐fast organisms to a greater extent than coliform organisms, and since yeast and acid‐fast organisms are more resistant to chlorine than coliforms, yeasts and acid‐fast organisms may be more valid indicators of the efficiency of water disinfection than the traditional indicators.
