How not to calibrate a hydraulic network model
This article challenges the notion that hydraulic network models should be calibrated by adjusting input parameters such as roughness and demand so that model results match some set of field data. With a thorough examination of the required input and extensive manipulation of the Hazen‐Williams formula, this article shows that adjustments to input data cannot be proved correct with typically available field data and might adversely affect model accuracy, particularly if an undiscovered network anomaly exists. Discussion focuses on how network anomalies can be discovered, how a model can be used appropriately within the limitations of input accuracy, and how the extensive use of a model can improve reliability.
