Artifacts, Architecture, and Routines
Symbols of Culture
Symbols represent intangible cultural values and beliefs. Architectural forms convey values, as do the symbols and signs that adorn walls or computer screens. Schools sometimes have a panoply of symbols and signs scattered throughout classrooms, hallways, and gathering places. This rich mix of symbolic artifacts makes schools either meaningful sanctuaries for students and celebrations of accomplishment or dead and empty vessels of bureaucratic control. The physical environment and architecture of schools speak volumes about cultural values and beliefs. Students and staff members spend much of their time encased in a physical environment of walls, halls, and spaces. Educators, students, and community connect in powerful ways to the symbols, artifacts, and logos of a school. School leaders need to think twice about their school's artifacts, architecture, symbols, signals, messages, and signs. Symbols, signs, and signals link everyone to the deeper purposes and meaning of the school.
