Reading, Writing, Arithmetic… and Water
In his column, AWWA Executive Director David LaFrance presents several ideas for California public schools to meet the requirements of SB1413, which requires California school districts to provide access to free, fresh drinking water during meal times in school food service areas by July 1, 2011. He first computes the cost per student for purchasing free, fresh drinking water, and then presents low‐cost alternatives for making water available in cafeterias during lunchtime, including: pitchers of water or large coolers filled with water on the lunchroom tables; water bottle‐filling stations; partnering opportunities for school districts and utilities; and, donated bottled water.
