Fire Prevention
The public and some fire professionals often consider the term fire prevention to signify “prevent ignition”. However, performance evaluations extend that concept to include both ignition and established burning (EB). The analysis is separated into two parts: the first examines traditional ignition prevention that relates to the ease of producing the first fragile flame that defines fire ignition; and the second looks at ways in which the initial flames can grow to the size defined as EB. Occupant extinguishment is an important part of a fire prevention program, and a realistic understanding of performance is important to risk management. Special hazard suppression equipment is normally installed to protect a spot area within a larger space. Explosion suppression systems use extremely sensitive detection devices that actuate during the time lag between ignition and the development of the destructive pressure.
