A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter reviews 21 building case studies in three categories: Apartments for Life (AFL), small group cluster nursing homes, and other long‐term care (LTC) options, including assisted living, hospice, and co‐housing. It details attributes of buildings that seek to provide exemplary environments for the oldest‐old. The chapter includes buildings from the US, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and the Netherlands. It discusses the Dutch AFL building type, which is illustrated by five buildings that share the same general philosophy. The chapter also reviews small group, cluster nursing homes from the US, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Three additional case studies demonstrate how the Danes and the Dutch are exploring the idea of reducing scale and enhancing the authority and responsibility of caregivers. An eclectic assemblage of buildings include an anthroposophic‐influenced care home, two small service houses, a dementia cluster within an assisted living building, a hospice, a co‐housing development, and a vacation village.
