Involving Stakeholders in the Development of a Global Water Certification Standard
This article describes the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) as a group of organizations who have come together in a commitment to help launch a common global water stewardship standard that will define how water users and utilities can develop and manage water in a way that is socially beneficial, environmentally responsible, and economically sustainable. The focus of the program is on developing an International Water Stewardship Standard based on critical aspects of water stewardship, such as managing flow, water quality, habitats, and ensuring good governance. When operational, the AWS program will provide a powerful new voluntary incentive to improve the way water is managed around the world through a rigorous yet realistic water stewardship standard. To encourage stakeholder involvement in this global water stewardship standard, the AWS has developed an inclusive, open platform ‐ a multiyear global water roundtable that was launched in June 2010, and is now in the process of forming the governing body of the roundtable ‐ the International Standard Development Committee (ISDC).
