How Do Different Forms of Construction Behave in Earthquakes?
In this chapter, the authors examine in more detail how each of the principal building types responds to earthquakes, what level of earthquake resistance they can expect to find, how buildings of different types are damaged in earthquakes and how and why they may collapse. They consider how new buildings of each type can be better built to improve their earthquake‐resistance, and look at strategies which can be adopted for retrofitting existing buildings. The main focus is on the use of each building type for housing, but the principles and methods described can be applied to buildings for any use. A classification of building construction types is necessary to organise this investigation. It includes masonry construction, reinforced concrete construction, timber frame construction, and steel frame construction. The chapter concludes with a brief overview of vulnerability, to enable a quantitative comparison to be made between the earthquake performance of different construction types.
