Villa Quadruple
This chapter presents the history and development process of villa quadruple. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of villa quadruple. The chapter is also an ideal resource for urban planners, housing developers, builders, and housing trust professionals. The quadruple villa, developed as workers' housing in Mulhouse, close to the Swiss and German borders, represents a very unusual example of the row house type. Each unit is composed of four dwellings and their respective outdoor spaces. The linear double orientation of the traditional row house has been modified and gives to these 19th‐century ‘villas’ an extrovert and oblique character. Unlike the Striesen Würfelhaus, which uses the image of a villa for the construction of horizontal apartments, the quadruple villa keeps a vertical organisation while cutting the main building volume and the front garden into four independent parts.
