Observations on Manganese in Georgia Waters
This article begins by providing a brief overview of the appearance of manganese in several different examples of Georgia waters that include: appearance in spring water only at higher temperatures; in the raw‐water intakes on the Chattahoochee River briefly in the fall season; and, the hypolimnion of Lake Lanier. Adjusting the intake levels on reservoirs is suggested for preventing manganese in raw water supplies, along with oxidation before filtration to insoluble manganic hydroxide using chlorine, chlorine dioxide, potassium permanganate, or ozone. Preventing stratification in small water supply reservoirs is suggested as another method by using an air jet, or any method to keep the reservoir continuously agitated.
