A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Computational Wind Engineering
This chapter presents a brief compendium of selected information on Computational Wind Engineering (CWE) modeling, numerical issues, and verification and validation procedures, with a view to acquainting wind and structural engineers with the CWE vocabulary and facilitating dialogue between wind and structural engineers on the one hand and CWE professionals on the other. The mathematical model used in CWE simulations consists of the governing equations of the flow. The chapter considers the requisite initial and boundary conditions and briefly discusses numerical solutions for the flow as represented by the discretized computational model. It reviews numerical stability issues and summaries turbulence models. The chapter provides a concise introduction to verification and validation (V&V), and uncertainty quantification (UQ). It considers the role of wind tunnel testing and CWE prospects in the simulation of aerodynamic effects and briefly discusses best practice guidelines (PBG).
