Underground Corrosion and Salt Infiltration
This study examined the mechanism of salt penetration into soil and the possible effects of infiltrated salts on underground corrosion. The results show that in well drained soil, salt moves rapidly from the surface and, even near heavily salted roadways, does not always accumulate, either at the soil surface or down to depths of 3 feet. After a review of simple corrosion cells, the article examines how infiltrated salts may alter the intensity of external underground corrosion.
