Some Olla Podrida from the Diary of a Garden Historian
Diary entries of a garden historian first introduce the spectacular landscape incorporating Crom Castle, Ireland, comparable to Scotney Castle, Kent, and a visit to Castle Drogo on the edge of Dartmoor by Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869–1944), where, unusually for a twentieth‐century garden, the records are encyclopaedic. On to Stourhead, a classical Elysium set in a picturesque landscape and to Sissinghurst Castle, Kent with a conservation plan for one of the greatest twentieth‐century gardens in England, then Nostell Priory, Yorkshire and Attingham Park, Shropshire. Finally, after years of negotiation, the golf course at Stowe, Buckinghamshire is at last to be moved from the heart of the landscape.
