Removal of ABS From Heavily Polluted Waters
During the past 2 years, the Association of American Soap and Glycerine Producers (AASGP) has sponsored a research investigation of the effectiveness of conventional water treatment processes for the removal of alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS) from raw water supplies. ABS is the most widely used surface‐active component of the ordinary detergents in general domestic use. The work has been carried out in the laboratories of the Department of Sanitary Engineering and Water Resources, Johns Hopkins University. Topics presented in this article include activated‐carbon treatment, foaming of ABS, adsorption efficiencies of activated carbons, and the effects of phenol, organic matter, pH, alum treatment, and clarification.
