Groundwater Recharge by Water Harvesting Structures in the Semiarid Zones
In this chapter, the authors report on a few examples from two regions located in the semiarid zones of India, where the impact of water harvesting structures (WHSs) on groundwater recharge has been documented. Demographic pressure, changes in land use patterns and state policies that indirectly encourage indiscriminate groundwater extraction have led to serious shortages in many parts of the country. The examples cited in this chapter have a sound scientific footing and can be extrapolated to other similar situations where the impact of WHS is required to be estimated. The rise in water table in wells due to WHS was observed to be higher toward the valley portion of watershed. Past experience (through integrated watershed development projects) has indicated that low‐cost measures implemented with stakeholder participation can positively contribute to groundwater recharge in the semiarid regions where dependence on rainfall is high.
