The importance of groundwaters is greater than ever. As surface waters are being more and more polluted and contaminated, the groundwater demand is constantly increasing. Artesian water supply is not unlimited. In almost every civilized country where the water supply is derived largely from artesian wells, artesian heads are generally decreasing. This means not only an increase in pumping expenses, but also a loss of usable groundwater. It should be borne in mind that this loss is largely due to the interconnection and recharge of aquifers by improperly constructed wells, not to proper groundwater development. The waste of water and energy can be eliminated by proper investigation. Discharge‐drawdown analysis is discussed, along with interconnected aquifers, rheometer tests, external interconnection, thermal dilatation, effect of temperature on head, corrosion, and corrosion protection.
