Specific organic removals by granular activated carbon pilot contactors
In pilot‐plant studies of Philadelphia drinking water, concentrations of organics in finished water varied. Pilot column effluent concentrations of organics exceeded influent levels if the influent concentrations were low. This “chromatographic effect” was most pronounced for variable or poorly adsorbed organics. Displacement‐desorption is postulated as the mechanism for this phenomenon.
