Predicting Expansion of Filters During Backwash
Backwashing sand filters gives rise to maintenance problems because the sand undergoes volume expansion. Knowing, with a fair amount of precision, how the sand will behave, therefore, can be helpful. Much of the work involved in predicting volume swell, until now, has been by rule of thumb. The authors describe a simple mathematical model that should overcome much of the prevailing uncertainty.
