Casa de Renta
This chapter presents the history and development process of Casa de Renta. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of Casa de Renta. The blocks of Barcelona's Eixample district are a fascinating example of the densification of a building typology with respect to a precise urban aim: the provision of a generous interior courtyard. The extreme depth of the apartment layouts is made bearable through internal ventilation shafts and the double aspect towards both the street and the courtyard. This latter feature is rarely found in other 19th‐century block typologies where the street remained the favoured orientation due to the relatively small and dark rear space. The city administration hesitated for a long time before instigating the city's extension (Eixample), and the first projects occurred as mid‐scale transformations of the overcrowded, dense and unsanitary city centre.
