Delays
This chapter identifies the difference between delay and disruption. It looks at different categories of delay, including ‘culpable’ or ‘inexcusable’ delays, ‘excusable’ delays and ‘neutral’ delays. We look at different types of delay: delays when construction cannot start on the date anticipated, delays due to a total stoppage of work, extended delays where the as‐planned duration of an activity is increased and delays where it is necessary to insert additional activities to the schedule. To assess delays, it is necessary to determine the production schedule and compare the schedule with that expected. This leads to a review of progress delay modelling. Here, the difference between Prospective and Retrospective modelling is considered. The importance of critical path modelling to the assessment of delays is discussed.
