Biotic and Abiotic Features of a Deep Wastewater Treatment Lagoon Used for Agricultural Irrigation
The purpose of this investigation was to gain information about the dynamics of a deep wastewater treatment lagoon. The experimental lagoon was fed with secondary effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Biotic and abiotic profiles were recorded throughout the water column between July 1996 and December 1997. Influent and effluent were also sampled. Stable thermal stratifications were produced during the summer, reductions in sanitary indicators were observed, and the best results were obtained during the mixing period. Decreases in total nitrogen levels were also observed, with best results obtained during the stratification period. Conductivity showed no great seasonal variations, with only a slight increase in effluent conductivity. At no time was its level beyond the usual range in agricultural irrigation (0 to 3000 S/cm).
