A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In this chapter, the author shares the discussion he had in an interview with Mariko Masuoka, a design Principal‐in‐Charge for academic projects, large‐scale civic projects, commercial mixed‐use developments, and master plans at Pelli Clarke & Partners. Mariko has also directed design teams for master planning projects such as Jingui Li, a large‐scale mixed‐used development in Wuxi, China; Heron Quays at Canary Wharf in London; Fan Pier in Boston, Massachusetts; and the Okinawa Institute for Science and Technology in Okinawa, Japan. As part of her Principal role, Mariko interviews all candidates for design positions in the firm's New Haven office. In the interview, she describes what she looks for. She also shares the attributes of strong engineering partners, the tradeoffs involved using architects‐of‐record, the value of patience, why clients come first, and other insights and lessons learned during her leadership journey.
