Cyclic storage systems optimization: Semidistributed parameter approach
As defined in this article, a cyclic storage system integrates a surface water subsystem with a groundwater subsystem in an interactive loop in order to satisfy demand. This article presents a semidistributed optimization model for design and operation of a proposed cyclic system. The model includes interacting components of surface and groundwater subsystems with the objective of minimizing total system costs. A generalized and modified unit‐response matrix method is developed and embedded into the optimization model. The response matrixes are developed employing the MODFLOW model. These unit responses are embedded into the optimization model forming a simulation‐optimization scheme. Application of the model shows that release from the reservoir does not necessarily follow a storage rule curve as might be expected in a noncyclic system. Solution to the proposed model, in addition to the design parameters, provides the optimal operation for the defined cyclic storage system.
