Green and Blue Infrastructure in Cities
Cities are particularly exposed to climate change and environmental problems caused by anthropic activities. Integrating green and blue infrastructure (GBI) within urban systems can enhance resilience in the face of disturbances. The term green infrastructure was coined in Florida, in 1994. In the last 15 years, several studies have described green infrastructure (GI), highlighting the strategic importance of GI's multiscalarity and multifunctionality. Green infrastructure or green and blue infrastructure, as it is also often defined, can provide economic and environmental benefits and a range of ecosystem services. It can mitigate extreme weather effects and climate‐related hazards, including storm surges, extreme precipitations and floods.
