A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
To integrate the various scales and activities of contemporary life, community planning requires methods capable of spanning the many ways that people live, think and work. To reflect and capture this rounded nature, planning methods need to draw on each of art, science, craft and governance. They are creative when they draw together ideas and materials to help shape new events and places; scientific when they test options and proposals against available information and projections; and craft‐like when they become an acquired skill, communicated through actions, words and drawings applicable to new situations. Finally, as a public activity they must be part of the political arena of representative governance and informed by community participation. Accordingly, the chapter is organized into the following sections: Art and creativity in planning Planning as a craft Science and knowledge in planning method Political Decision and Community Participation Conclusions: values‐based methods to promote values‐based outcomes.
